AIDS – Signs and Symptoms

Some people do not develop any symptoms after HIV infection. Most people develop a flu-like infection with a month of HIV infection. This is acute or primary HIV infection. This remains for two to six weeks. Signs and symptoms of such infection include:

– Fever
– Diarrhea
– Headache
– Swollen lymph glands on neck
– Red rashes
– Muscle and joint pain
– Headache
– Weight loss
– Night sweats
– Fatigue
– Sore throat
– Mouth or genital ulcers

These primary symptoms remain largely undiagnosed, as they are common to most diseases. Nonetheless, it is important to recognize the syndrome during this period, as you are now extremely infectious.

In most cases after the initial bout, you do not develop any symptoms. You feel healthy and remain almost symptom-free. The major symptom is persistent lymph node swelling. This period could last for more than a decade. However, HIV continues to damage and destroy your body immune system during this period.

Late-Stage Symptoms

You become extremely prone to various types of infections. Symptoms include:

– Persistent fever higher than100 F (38 C) continuing for weeks
– Shivering
– Breathlessness
– Cough
– Chronic diarrhea
– Blurred vision
– Excessive and unexplained fatigue
– Unusual lesions or white spots on tongue and mouth
– Rashes or bumps on skin
– Excessive night sweats
– Unexplained weight loss
