AIDS – Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

Diagnosis of AIDS involves two steps:

1. Screening Test
2. Confirmatory Test

In the screening test, doctor takes your blood sample from a finger stick or vein. Some take a urine sample or an oral swab. This is checked for presence of HIV antigen, a protein produced by virus immediately after infection.

You get to know the results within twenty minutes and in some cases, within few days. If you test positive, you undergo indirect immunofluorescence assay test or a Western blot. This is a confirmatory test. However, merely being HIV-positive does not confirm presence of AIDS.

Diagnostic Tests and Procedures for AIDS

Once you are tested positive for AIDS, you undergo various tests to determine stage of AIDS infection. These tests include:

CD4 Cell Count: Normal CD4 cell count ranges between five hundred and thousand or even more. Once HIV infection sets in, count of CD4 cells continues to fall. If cell count is less than 200, HIV infection has progressed to AIDS.

Drug Resistance: This test detects which anti-HIV medications would suit and work best against your HIV strain.

Viral Load: This test determines the amount of HIV virus in your blood.

Further Tests Used in the Diagnosis of AIDS

Doctor advises further tests to detect any other infections and complications like:

– Sexually transmitted infections
– Hepatitis
– Tuberculosis
– Liver or kidney damage
– Toxoplasmosis
– Urinary tract infection
