Albinism – Definition and Diagnosis

Definition of Albinism

Albinism is a congenital inherited disorder leading to negligible or nil production of pigment melanin. This is due to partial or complete absence of enzyme tyrosinase. This enzyme contains copper and is responsible for production of melanin. Amount and type of melanin determines color of eyes, skin, and hair. Albinism is same as achromasia, achromia, or achromatosis.

Albinism affects all vertebrates. An organism with nil presence of melanin is an albino and organism with little melanin is an albinoid.

Diagnosis of Albinism

Albinism is confirmed through genetic testing as it occurs due to inheritance of recessive gene alleles. Albinism does not affect intellectual development although such people feel socially isolated. Albinism causes various vision defects like nystagmus, photophobia, and astigmatism. Poor skin pigmentation makes you susceptible to sunburn and skin cancers.
