Albinism – Causes and Evaluation
Causes of Albinism
Melanocytes are cells found in skin and eyes responsible for production of melanin. Albinism occurs due to mutation in any one of the several genes. These defects could be hereditary. Albinism occurs when your body is unable to produce or distribute melanin.
Evaluation of Albinism
Each gene provides chemically coded instructions to produce one of the several proteins responsible for production of melanin. Mutation of gene results in significant reduction in production of melanin or in some cases nil production of melanin. You should inherit two copies of a mutated gene, one from each parent. Only then, you develop albinism. If you inherit only one copy, you do not develop albinism.
