Albinism – Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of albinism include:

Skin: Normally, skin is milky white. Pigmentation ranges from white to brown depending on skin color of parents. In some cases, there is no skin pigmentation at all. In few other cases, melanin production begins or increases during childhood or adolescence. Sun exposure tans skin. Some people develop moles and freckles.

Hair: Hair color ranges from white to brown. Sometimes it changes during early adulthood. People of Asian or African descent have brown, yellow, or reddish hair.

Color of Eyes: Eyes are translucent due to absence of pigment in irises. Eye color ranges from very light blue to brown. Very light colored eyes often appear red in color as light is reflected back from the iris.

Vision: Vision problems develop due to lack of melanin in iris and underdevelopment of optic nerve, hypoplasia. Common vision problems associated with albinism include Amblyopia or decrease in acuity of one or both eyes due to poor transmission of nerve signals to brain, Nystagmus or irregular rapid movement of eyes in circular motion or back and forth, Astigmatism or irregular shaped cornea requiring cylindrical corrective lenses in spectacles, Photophobia or light sensitivity, and extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Frequent Nosebleeds: Frequent nosebleeds and easy bruising or chronic infections occur due to Hermansky-Pudlak or Chediak-Higashi syndromes.

Vision Impairments: Vision impairments are definitely present in albinism irrespective of whether other symptoms occur or not.
