Albinism – Treatments and Medications

Albinism does not have any cure, as it is a genetic disorder. Treatment aims to improve symptoms and manage your life better. Treatment focuses on visual rehabilitation.

Common eye problems in albinism with remedial visual rehabilitation techniques include:

Nystagmus: This causes regular horizontal back and forth movement of eyes. Nystagmus-damping surgery can restrict shaking of eyes appreciably. Use colored contact lenses to block light transmission through iris. If you have nystagmus, avoid doing so as it could cause irritation in eyes. Use newer designs of bioptics that can be mounted on contact lenses

Strabismus: This could be exotropia, a ‘lazy eye’ that protrudes or esotropia, which means crossed eyes, or muscular imbalance of eyes. Surgery can improve appearance of eyes. It increases your visual field in esotropia.

Photophobia: This is sensitivity to glare and bright light. Wear tinted contact lenses or sunglasses when venturing outdoors. When indoors, place light over your shoulder for better viewing.

Vision Problems: Albinism affects your vision and you could be near-sighted or far-sighted. Optic nerves do not follow normal routes and hence brain signals are not received properly. Use contact lenses, prescription reading glasses, or bifocals with strong reading lens. Use screen magnification products on computers or hand-held magnifiers while reading.

Surgery on ocular muscles reduces refractive errors like those of astigmatism, nystagmus, and strabismus. However, surgery cannot correct fine binocular vision, eyesight, or misrouting of optic nerves. Effectiveness of surgical options depends largely on individual cases and circumstances. You should visit your ophthalmologist at regular intervals and follow all instructions and suggestions. Eye examinations and testing continue for your life.

Skin Problems in Albinism

You should examine and screen your skin for lesions or skin cancer. Treatment depends on severity of your skin problems. It includes:

1. Use sunscreen lotions with high protection factor of 30 or more.

2. Cover up your body with clothes to avoid chances of sunburns.

3. Visit doctor immediately if you notice any changes in skin color or pigmentation as it could be an early indication of skin cancer.
