Albinism – Clinical Trials and Research Studies
Albinism affects people from all races. Autosomal chromosomes are responsible for body characteristics. Normally, you have two copies of these chromosomes with inherited genes from both parents. If you have albinism, these gene copies are non-functional. If you have one copy, your body is capable of making the pigment but you carry albinism trait.
Both parents should carry a defective gene to have a child with albinism. If both parents carry defective gene but neither have albinism, chances of a baby with albinism are one in four. This is called ‘autosomal recessive’ inheritance.
It is not possible to predict beforehand if your baby will be born with albinism. Nonetheless, if one of your children has albinism confirmed by DNA analysis, it is possible to test subsequent pregnancies if fetus has albinism.
